Description. Since its appearance in 1986 in the United States, the term "biodiversity" spread at the rate of an invasive species. On the one hand, the use of the term has been criticized because it conveys a non genuinely scientific notion; on the other hand, the need of conserving biodiversity is seen as an imperative. The multifaceted, and problematic, nature of the term gave rise to different types of discourses, involving multiple disciplines. To these discourses, and in particular those concerning the economic worth of biodiversity, its scientific assessment, and its ethical and aesthetical significance, is devoted this conference. The approach is interdisciplinary, encouraging dialogue among scholars coming from the philosophy of science, biology, ecology, ethics, political science, as well as artists and food specialists. The conference aims at being accessible also to non-experts.
